Halloween is a fun and exciting time for both children and adults alike! But according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the likelihood of a pedestrian crash goes up 47.5% on Halloween when compared to the average October day. The following safety tips are recommended for all drivers in the Bay State traveling on Halloween night:
Slow down: You should drive slower than the posted speed limit to allow more time to stop and look for pedestrians.
Be alert and yield: Children may be unaware of traffic in their excitement. Always yield to little goblins and ghouls, even if you think they see you.
Avoid distractions: Turn off your phone, keep the music low, and avoid eating while driving.
Use your headlights and hazards: Keep your headlights on to increase your visibility to pedestrians and other drivers and, if you see several little ghosts running from house to house, make sure to put your hazard lights on to make other vehicles and drivers aware.
Don’t ever drink and drive: According to NHTSA, drunk driving accounts for almost half of traffic fatalities on Halloween night. If you’re hosting a Halloween party, be responsible and make sure your partygoers get home safely. Call a taxi, rideshare, or provide sleeping accommodations for guests who have had too much to drink.
Be careful when backing out: Be cautious when backing out of driveways and parking spots, as children may not always look carefully in their excitement.
It’s scary out there, so make sure to buckle up, put your phones down, and drive safely. MassDOT and MAPFRE Insurance want you to prepare for the scare and be aware so everyone can have a happy and safe Halloween!
