Insurance Coverage for Antique and Classic Vehicles

If you own a classic or antique car in Massachusetts, no doubt you take special care of it and want to ensure it has the proper insurance coverage. So, what kind of auto insurance should you have?

There are four types of mandatory car insurance coverage (also called compulsory coverage) for all private-passenger vehicles in Massachusetts. Those coverages are:

If you live in Massachusetts, you can also take optional coverages like Comprehensive, Collision and Limited Collision coverageMedical PaymentsUnderinsured coverage, Optional Bodily Injury to Others, Substitute Transportation, and Towing and Labor offered by MAPFRE Insurance.

While you would already be covered under a MAPFRE auto policy, you may also want to add-on our Antique Automobile Endorsement for extra peace of mind and protection for your classic or antique car,. The endorsement provides mandatory liability coverage if the vehicle is used in any capacity other than as an antique.

What does the Antique Automobile Endorsement cover?

When you add the Antique Automobile Endorsement to your auto insurance policy, you would pay the lowest of the following three values, minus your deductible, in the event of a loss on a private passenger policy:

    a) The actual cash value of the automobile at the time of the loss. Actual cash value is defined as the replacement cost of the vehicle minus depreciation and/or obsolescence.
    b) The amount necessary for the vehicle to be repaired or replaced.
    c) The specific amount listed on the Stated Amount Coverage Endorsement.

How do I qualify for Antique Automobile Endorsement coverage?

In order to qualify for this coverage from MAPFRE, your vehicle must be:

  • Registered as an antique with the Massachusetts Registry of motor vehicles
  • Over 25 years old
  • Used solely in exhibitions, parades, club activities and functions of public interest, and not used primarily for transporting passengers or goods

If you are requesting Collision, Limited Collision, or Comprehensive coverages, MAPFRE requires an appraisal and a photograph of the vehicle. The appraisal must be performed by an authorized appraisal firm and must be paid for by the primary driver on the insurance policy.

Are there mileage limits on my antique car?

There are no mileage limits when you insure your antique car with MAPFRE Insurance.

Are there any storage requirements for my antique car?

Unlike some other insurance carriers, MAPFRE does not require you to store your antique car in a special place like a garage, carport or enclosed building.
