Coverages
-
Liability Coverage
Liability coverage is required car insurance in most states. There are two types of liability coverage – bodily injury liability coverage and property damage liability coverage. It typically helps cover damages for those injured or killed and incurred property damage as the result of an at-fault accident.
-
Collision Coverage
Collision insurance is a type of coverage that helps cover damage to the insured’s car as a result of a collision. In an at-fault accident where the car is totaled, collision insurance can help compensate the policyholder for the value of the vehicle. In some cases, like in Massachusetts, collision damages to the insured’s vehicle may be covered whether at fault or not. Deductibles would apply.
-
Comprehensive Coverage
When you’re insured by MAPFRE, this coverage typically protects the insured and their vehicle from direct and accidental damage, outside of a collision with another car or object. Comprehensive coverage typically covers things like damage to the insured vehicle from extreme weather, vandalism, or theft.
-
Medical Payments
Medical payments coverage, sometimes called MedPay, usually helps pay for expenses related to necessary medical and funeral services for the insured, their family and their passengers following an accident, regardless of fault. In many states, MedPay is an optional addition to an insurance policy, but there are states where it is mandatory coverage.
-
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Sometimes called no-fault coverage, PIP is similar to MedPay in that it can help cover medical expenses. However, in some states, PIP is mandatory coverage.
-
Full Coverage
Full coverage isn’t a type of insurance, but rather a description for a combination of insurance including liability, collision, comprehensive and sometimes medical payments coverage. It offers the most protection and is typically more expensive than minimum liability insurance alone.
-
Uninsured Motorist Coverage
In an accident where the at-fault driver isn’t insured or doesn’t have enough insurance, uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage can help cover costly medical bills. UM / UIM coverage typically helps cover medical expenses the insured or their passengers sustain in the car accident when the other driver is uninsured or their insurance is insufficient.
